Heiligenkreuz Abbey
The almost 900 years old Cistercian monastery was founded by margrave St. Leopold III, a Babenberger, and exists without any interruption. Heiligenkreuz is the largest living Cistercian monastery in Europe today. Almost 100 monks residing there, who, among other things, run the high school Heiligenkreuz, and look after three priories and 21 parishes.
The Heiligenkreuzer Cistercians attach particular importance to cultivate choral prayings and pray the world-famous Latin Gregorian chant. With their big success of their CD „CHANT - Music for Paradise“ the monks of Heiligenkreuz could carry their spirituality of pray around the world. The solemn chor prayer is public.
The monastery courtyard with the Holy Trinity column and the medieval Abbey Church are freely accessible. There are guided tours in the actual monastery area. You can see architecture and works of art from the 12th and 13th centuries, the Baroque and the present.
